1. Initial Response
This is your very first response to an event or substance. It is often thought to be the best indicator of whether or not it suits you. I.e. your first cigarette or alcoholic drink. How did it really taste the first time you tried it? Maybe you should have trusted your first response.
2. Adaptation
This is where your body very quickly learns to adapt to your new and continued use of a substance (cigarette, alcohol and tea/coffee etc). I.e. you no longer cough or have a pounding heart after you have a cigarette. This is because your lungs adapt and change to protect themselves from the smoke and chemicals. Similar changes take place with other harmful substances, your body adapts as much as possible to protect itself.
3. Exhaustion
If you continue with the harmful substances long enough, you may become sick. You may have developed high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease or liver problems, to name but a few. The body just could not cope with all the abuse; it could not adapt any more. This is usually when outside help is needed.
4. Recovery
To enable your body to recover you need to avoid or at least greatly reduce the amount of the harmful substance entering your body. You need to have as healthy lifestyle as possible and have a healthy well-balanced diet. Also after consultation with your doctor, additional vitamin and minerals may be required to speed up recovery and maintain health.
5. Hypersensitivity
Now you have recovered and are healthy, which may have taken years, you are back to stage one. But because your lifestyle has changed so much and improved you may seem very sensitive and react to all sorts of things that you never reacted to before. This time it is important to listen more closely to your body, if your initial reaction to a new substance is negative take note, hopefully you will have learnt your lesson. You might not get a third chance at it.
